Request Your Free Case Review Now

If you or someone you love has been charged with a criminal offense, you need to reach out to an attorney right now. You can contact our Rockville law firm 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and your initial case review is free. That gives you a risk-free opportunity to determine whether we are the right firm for you.

Why Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

Challenge the Prosecution

Prosecutors and police will use any evidence they can to persuade juries and judges of your guilt. With our criminal defense attorneys on your case, we will investigate all evidence presented against you and highlight discrepancies. Did officers follow the law and proper protocol? Are there questionable eyewitness accounts presented against you? If something doesn't hold up, our criminal defense lawyers will make it clear to the court.

Foster Empathy

It's natural for people to come into a situation with preconceived notions, including jurors. Our Rockville law firm takes the time to get to know you personally, so we can humanize you to the jury. Prosecutors are motivated by guilty verdicts and will do whatever they can to present you as someone who deserves to be punished. By explaining who you are and how these charges came to be, our criminal defense attorneys can demonstrate to jurors that you much more than the charges you face.

Clear Your Name

A criminal conviction can have life-long repercussions. The law offices of Greenblatt & Veliev in Rockville will build a strong case to have your charges dropped or reduced. Keeping your name free of criminal convictions can ensure that important opportunities for advancement in life aren't taken from you.

A Criminal Charge Is Not a Guilty Verdict

It can be all too easy to be perceived as guilty from the beginning when the strongest case is being presented by the prosecution. Simply being a defendant can cause jurors to have an unfavorable perception of you. The criminal lawyers at Greenblatt & Veliev in Rockville will scrutinize all evidence presented against you. By getting to know you as an individual and learning the details of your case, our criminal defense lawyers can make sure you are portrayed as a person, not a criminal.

Misdemeanors vs. Felonies Understanding the Charges

Depending on the nature of the alleged crime, you may be facing a misdemeanor charge or a felony charge. The two carry unique penalties and can affect your future in different ways.

Misdemeanors

Misdemeanors are generally considered less serious than felonies. Examples include drunk driving, second degree assault, and theft under $1,000. If convicted of a misdemeanor offense, you may be subject to imprisonment for up to a year and/or fines of up to $10,000.

Felonies

Felonies are considered more serious and include crimes like robbery, murder, sexual assault, and drug possession with intent to distribute. They can carry significant fines and anywhere from one year to life in prison, as well as the loss of the rights to vote and to possess a firearm.

The penalties for misdemeanors and felonies are wholly dependent on the specific crime. In some cases, misdemeanors actually carry larger penalties than felonies. Our criminal defense attorneys in Rockville can help you clearly understand the charges you're facing and formulate the best possible strategy for your defense.

We Can Pursue a Jury Trial or a Bench Trial To Give You the Best Chance at Winning

The State of Maryland allows criminal defendants to be tried either in a jury trial or a bench trial. One may be advantageous over the other depending on the nature of your case.

Jury Trial

In a jury trial, a group of 12 of your peers will decide whether you are guilty or not guilty of the criminal charge. This form of trial can be preferable because your defense attorney only has to convince a single juror in your favor—a jury must be in unanimous agreement to return a guilty verdict. Defendants in jury trials also typically have more opportunities to appeal if found guilty.

Bench Trial

Bench trials are conducted by the judge alone. This can be preferable if the nature of your case is sensitive, as judges are trained to consider only the facts of a case rather than potential emotions. It may also be beneficial if there is especially complex information involved that may be difficult for a jury to understand. Bench trials are usually much quicker than jury trials, but there tend to be fewer grounds for appeal.

The STET Docket And How It Could Affect Your Case

Maryland has a special type of disposition called a STET in which a criminal case can be indefinitely postponed while the defendant fulfills certain conditions, such as completing drug counseling, community service, or paying restitution to the victim. Upon completion of the conditions, as long as the STET has not been reopened, the charges will be dismissed.

You will have to wave your right to a speedy trial to pursue a STET, and these agreements are not offered in all cases. However, if you are eligible, it can be the difference between jail time and fines or your freedom.

When Your Future Is on the Line Put It in the Best Hands Possible

If you're facing a criminal charge, you may be tempted to go with a public defender in the belief that it will speed up the legal process and help you avoid steep costs. What many defendants don't realize is that public defenders are often saddled with massive caseloads that spread their energy and attention thin. You also do not get to choose your public defender, so there is no guarantee they will be an experienced criminal defense attorney with the ability to implement every strategy to have your charges reduced or dropped.

Our dedicated criminal defense attorneys have more than 65 years of combined experience defending clients like you. We carefully manage our caseloads so we can give each client the full attention they deserve. Additionally, we offer free consultations and work on contingency, so our representation will cost you absolutely nothing unless we win your case. Criminal Defense Practice Areas Greenblatt & Veliev Frequently Handle

Close up of a clenched fist

Assault

Assaut is often defined as "an intentional act that puts another person in reasonable apprehension of imminent harmful or offensive contact." Prison time, fines, and restraining orders are some potential consequences of being convicted of assault. Our attorneys can determine if the police followed protocol, question the eyewitness accounts against you, and explore the possibility that you were acting in self-defense.

Arguing couple

Domestic Violence

If you've been charged with domestic violence, we can analyze the evidence, the related police actions, and other aspects of your case to find any inconsistencies.

bag of white powder

Drug Charges

Getting caught with even small amounts of certain drugs can result in felony charges. If police deem that you have enough illegal drugs to distribute and manufacture, you can face decades in prison. The attorneys at our Rockville, Maryland, law firm can start building a strong defense for your case if you're accused of drug possession or other drug crimes.

man in arraignment

Sex Crimes

A criminal sex charge can permanently damage your reputation. If convicted, you may be placed on a public sex offender's list, limiting where you can live and what employment opportunities are available to you. Our attorneys know sex crimes can be sensitive and difficult to face. We represent each client facing sex crimes with dignity and respect, and let the facts of your case speak for themselves.

Id check

Fake ID

False IDs are typically used by underage people to consume alcohol or enter 21 and older clubs. If you're an underage person who was charged with using a fake ID, or if your child is facing these charges, our attorneys can protect your rights. Our attorneys can help to have these charges dropped or reduced so that they have a minimal impact on your future.

Contact our Rockville law office so our attorneys can take a look at your case and determine what they can do for you. We will review your criminal case, look at ways a felony may be reduced to a misdemeanor, and develop a criminal defense approach to your case that can stand up against aggressive prosecutors and stigmas. As a defendant, you have rights, and it is our job to protect them.

Expunging Criminal Convictions

Certain arrests and convictions can be eliminated from your record through expungement. Once you have been granted expungement, you have a legal right to say you do not have a criminal record. Background checks will no longer show a record of these convictions or arrests, and you no longer have to disclose the incidents under any circumstances.

Criminal records carry stigmas and hamper your ability to advance your career and your education. Expungement is one of our many practice areas. To explore whether you can have charges or arrests expunged from your record, get in touch with our Rockville law firm.
