The state of Maryland uses the term "commercial motor vehicle" to describe various vehicles that are used to carry passengers or transport cargo.
A commercial motor vehicle must be used for those stated tasks and also meet at least one of the following criteria:
- Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) of 26,001 pounds or greater
- Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or greater
- Ability to carry 16 or more passengers (including the driver)
- Used for the transport of hazardous materials that require placarding
