Maryland has a high rate of auto/pedestrian crashes

Do you know that 25 percent of fatal collisions in Maryland involve pedestrians? Certain times of the year pose higher risks of pedestrian/auto accidents overall – spring and fall.

Fatalities involving pedestrians peak in the four months between September and December.

Likewise, specific days and times bring more danger to Maryland pedestrians. Evenings and weekends are fraught with more danger, with Fridays being the most deadly day for pedestrians to be involved in collisions.

Almost 50 percent of pedestrian accidents happen between the hours of 3 p.m. and 10 p.m., but more fatal crashes happen from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Young adult and teen drivers collide with pedestrians with greater frequency than older drivers here in Maryland. Younger pedestrians, too, are at greater risk, as almost 40 percent of collisions occur to those ages 10 to 29.

Older pedestrians, however, suffer more fatal injuries in collisions, perhaps not so surprisingly. Those pedestrians between 45 and 59 account for more than 30 percent of those in traffic fatalities.

Most drivers and victims in these crashes are men, and 70 percent of pedestrian deaths happen to men. Nearly 50 percent of the drivers in wrecks with pedestrians were male.

Car Accidents Dangerous for Pedestrians

Each year, the state’s drivers get into almost 3,000 accidents with pedestrians. In over 86 percent of that total, the pedestrian is injured or killed.

If you were injured or if a loved one was killed in a pedestrian crash, you may decide to pursue legal action against the driver who caused you so much pain, suffering, lost wages and other recoverable expenses.
