Pedestrian accidents happen for a variety of reasons, but many occur simply because drivers do not see people in crosswalks or on the side of the road. As such, it’s easy to imagine that many pedestrian accidents happen at night, but is this really true?

While these crashes certainly can happen during the day, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention do list night as one of their main risk factors. They also say that the majority of deadly pedestrian accidents share three main factors: They happen in areas that are not intersections, they happen in urban centers, and they occur at night.

Alcohol Also A Pedestrian Accident Cause

The CDC also warns about alcohol use. Research show that about 49 percent of the deadly accidents involved alcohol on the behalf of the pedestrian or the driver. Of these, 24 percent involved pedestrians who tested out with a Blood Alcohol Concentration of at least 0.08. In just 15 percent of the incidents was the driver’s BAC over 0.08.

As you can see, this paints a fairly clear picture of how a lot of pedestrian accidents occur. People are out at bars and restaurants and have been drinking – either the drivers or the pedestrians themselves – and they’re out after dark. Accidents are already more common when alcohol is involved, and the dark makes it worse.

Alcohol use is also more common at night, which links these two factors together.
