The first step is to ask a lot of questions. When did the landlord buy the property? Who does the maintenance, the landlord or a third party? Do tenants have to repair anything, or does the landlord do it all? Who does outdoor work, like raking leaves or shoveling snow?

These are just a few examples, but it may help to make an extensive list of questions before the meeting. Don't be afraid to bring anything up. After all, if the landlord says he or she will make repairs, fails to do so and causes you to be injured, you may be able to seek compensation. The more you know about your situation up front, the better.
